Duties & Responsibilities
Following are the duties and responsibilities of the Justice of the Peace:
- Hears traffic and other Class C misdemeanor cases (most traffic cases, theft under $100, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, driving without a valid license, simple assault, gambling, criminal trespassing, living a child in a vehicle, possession of alcohol in a vehicle, minor in possession of alcohol, minor driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia) punishable by fine only up to $500.
- Hears civil cases with up to $10,000 in controversy.
- Hears landlord and tenant disputes.
- Hears truancy cases.
- Performs magistrate duties.
- Conducts inquests.
